Minecraft 'Story Mode' coming to all platforms in 2015

Announced in a humorous mini-RPG 'Info Quest II', the first major update to the Minecraft universe since Microsoft purchased the Swedish developer Mojang for $2.5 billion is an entirely unexpected one: Minecraft 2

Actually, the announcement partnership with the development house du jour, Telltale Games, on a "narrative driven" in the style of the wildly successful Walking Dead series.

Telltale Games have been around for almost a decade and have been on a roll lately having achieved critical and popular acclaim with their recent games The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us and recently launched series based on Game of Thrones and Borderlands.

Quick to clarify that Story Mode will be a standalone title, not an add-on for the existing Minecraft game, Telltale games explained that the game will be set "in the world of Minecraft" and that the series will feature an original story, driven by player choice, mixing in new characters with familiar themes in "an entirely original Minecraft experience, inspired by the Minecraft community".

Shedding a little more light on the project as a standaone title Mojang added, "We’re not intending on creating an 'official' story for Steve, or explaining the world of Minecraft in detail" and that it wants Story Mode to be a cool game.

Mojang were keen to stress, "The Minecraft 2 thing was a joke. No really. It was a joke."

As with other recent Telltale games, Minecraft: Story Mode will be released in six episodes and is expected to launch sometime in 2015 on Xbox and Playstation consoles, PC, iOS, Mac and Android-based devices. Windows Phone is notable in it's absence, but Windows 10 may make that point moot when it releases next year.
