Windows 10 for Phone preview comes closer with Phone Insider App

At this stage everyone knows that Microsoft has a big Windows event in two weeks time and at that event they are going to reveal "The Next Chapter" of Windows. It is expected that this will be Windows on PC, Windows on Xbox One and it is presumed that it will also be Windows on Phone.

Well, the Windows on Phone bit came a little closer over the weekend as Microsoft released a new app Phone Insider.

The description in the Store leaves little to the imagination:

The Phone Insider application provides registered Windows Insiders the ability to receive pre-release OS updates on their phone, directly from Microsoft. For more information about registering and becoming a Windows Insider visit http://insider.windows.com.

This tool looks like it will be used to distibute early builds on Windows 10 to Phone devices, rather than the Preview for Developer app for Windows Phone 8.1,

At the moment the App doesn't have any useful functionality, unless you have a Microsoft Domain account (note: not a Microsoft account, like for Outlook.com, rather an actual Microsoft Employee account.)

It does require that you register as a Windows Insider, rather than a developer as before, and means that it is far more likely to open it up to mainstream users who could have been wary or not thought of themselves as developers.

On the PC side of things, Microsoft has already seen almost half a million people use Windows 10 Technical Preview builds on their daily machine.

We can expect that details of this app and availability of the first Preview Build on 21. January. The build will be available globally and will be of particular interest to the growing numbers of Windows Phone users in Ireland.

Go ahead and download the app, and be ready for when Microsoft flips the switch after their big event.
