3D Creator on Sony Xperia XZ can now post directly to Facebook

3D Facebook Posts with new Update.

One of the standout features of the Sony Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact handsets we reviewed last year was the quick, accurate and very flexible 3D Creator. It easily allowed you to create a 3D model of almost anything or anyone and, well, that was about it.

It had great potential and we were interested to see where this technology would go to make it more useful or mainstream. From today, a new update to 3D Creator means that users can share their 3D scans directly to their Facebook friends using Facebook’s interactive 3D post format, so anyone who sees the post will be able to rotate, spin, pinch and zoom in directly from the Facebook News Feed - opening up a whole new world of possibilities for 3D sharing.

Artists or business might post a 3D Scan of their wares, hairdressers could have a 3D Scan of hairstyles they offer. It gives businesses more opportunities for customers to get a good look at their wares from the comfort of their own homes.

This was made possible by Facebook rolling out support for the industry-standard glTF 2.0 file format for Facebook 3D posts. With glTF 2.0 compliance comes support for textures, lighting, and realistic rendering techniques — so from rough to shiny, metallic to soft, beautifully detailed 3D art can now come alive on Facebook.

3D creation is no longer just for professionals – 3D Creator by Sony has made it accessible to everyone, the application will be updated through Google Play.
