How eir’s mobile customers are using more data than ever
eir has seen a huge surge in data usage on its mobile network in the first quarter of 2023.

According to its mobile data report, eir’s mobile customers used 41% more data in Q1 2023 compared to the same time last year, with each county experiencing substantial growth. The report, which was shared with Techknow Ireland, reveals some interesting insights into how and where Irish consumers are using their data connection on eir’s mobile network.
County Leitrim saw the highest growth at 50%, followed by County Louth at 48% and County Sligo at 47%. These counties benefited from eir’s investment of more than €2.5 million in Leitrim’s mobile network and €3 million in Louth’s mobile network last year. County Westmeath saw the lowest growth at 22%, followed by County Roscommon at 23% and County Longford at 24%.
Cork City was the busiest location for both voice and data usage in the country, according to the report. Fairhill, Cork was the top spot for voice calls, while Cork City Centre was the top spot for data usage. The report also shows increased 5G usage across Ireland, with Dublin Airport being the most popular site for 5G usage, followed by Mullingar Town Centre and O’Connell St Dublin.
The increase in mobile data usage in Ireland can be attributed to several factors, including competitive unlimited minutes and unlimited data tariffs, the increased adoption of 5G enabled devices with next generation capabilities, and an increase in data-intensive applications, such as video and gaming streaming services.
Susan Brady, Managing Director of eir Consumer and Small Business, said that the report highlights eir’s commitment to providing high-quality mobile services to its customers and its investment in 5G technology.
“At eir, we provide our customers with access to world class connectivity, our broadband having recently been confirmed by Ookla to have the lowest latency in Ireland. eir invests more in Irish telecommunications than anyone else, investing €250 million annually in its communications networks,” she said.
